Organizational Chart with ConceptDraw PRO

An organizational chart is a chart which represents the structure of an organization in terms of rank. It's very convenient for showing formal relationships in large organizations in a clear, visual form. Normally, an organizational chart is made up of rectangular blocks representing positions of the staff, and relationship between them.

There are several types of relationships:

• Line - direct relationship between superior and subordinate.

  

• Lateral - relationship between different departments on the same level of hierarchy

  

• Staff - relationship between a managerial assistant and other employees. The assistant can offer advice, however, decisions are made by the employees.

  

• Functional - relationships between specialists and other employees. Unlike the assistant, the specialist may insist that their instructions are implemented. For example, a specialist may include consultants or subject matter experts who work outside the organization.

  

One of the features of organizational chart is that it can be dissected into smaller charts. This is convenient for large organizations with a complicated branched structure, making it hard to be described by a single chart and working with such a chart inconvenient.

There are three different types of organizational chart:

• Hierarchical - describe the hierarchy of the organizational structure.

  

• Matrix - divide the structure of the organization by types of works. All the employees, engaged in work of the same type belong to the same array, regardless their position in the hierarchy.

  

• Flat - oriented to working processes. They describe the manufacturing path of the product.

Diagrams are created with the help of library shapes including various types of blocks representing positions, two types of connectors and a shape depicting a department or a group of people with similar functions.

To build a diagram just drag a required number of blocks representing positions onto the document, arrange them in the needed order and connect with connectors. Note, that connected blocks remain connected even when moved. It makes formatting a diagram convenient.
The drawbacks of organizational charts are their need for regular updating. In the case of a large company and limited representation of social relations between the employees (only formal relations are depicted).

For example, you can use dotted lines to demonstrate conventionality of a relationship or low priority, and thick lines to emphasize high priority.
