GTD widget for iCal

I proudly present to you first ConceptDraw Lab product!

It is Mac OS X dashboard widget that partially implements Getting Things Done methodology. It allows you instantly get all the stuff out of your head into selected Inbox in iCal and view your Next Actions without launching iCal.

When reading this post you spent more time, than you need to discover how it works. So just install it and run. Of course, you can read the detailed widget description placed below.

Widget corresponds to GTD stages like following:

  1. Collect.
Just type your stuff into widget, press ‘enter’ and widget creates to-do item in calendar that was selected as current inbox. Any iCal calendar is considered as an inbox and you can select it easily.

  2. Process.
You can do it in iCal at any manner or use any GTD software compatible with iCal.

  3. Organize.
    Same as at stage 2.

  4. Review.
Same as at stage 2 and 3.

  5. Do.
To help you navigate at this stage widget shows Next Events list which includes all actions and events you’ve scheduled for today.

So enjoy using this widget and may all your things get done!

P.S.
We hope to read your comments and suggestions regarding this widget.

Lovely! A very nice first offering. I’d love to be able to add a due date and alarm as well.

This is cool, but it looks cheap without the anti-alias edges and drop shadow.

First, thanks for the free widget download.
However, two problems: 1. Storage options in pull down window did not include “iCal”. They had home, wiretap pro, business, etc. Is all this iCal anyway? 2. While the lareger screen below showed an activity I had already placed in iCal for today, it did not show the new activity I typed in above even after I hit “enter”, “return”, went out of Dashboard and came back. The new “To Do” info is not registering. It remains in the data entry box. Any suggestions? Thanks. –Paul.

    2Paul Otterness:
    1. Home, wiretap pro, business and others is your iCal calendars.
    2. When type new activity it goes as to do into calendar you have selected as inbox. In the large area bellow Next Events caption you see all your events scheduled for today, not to do’s.
According to GTD technique you need to continuously collect all your stuff into some inbox and periodically review it transforming this stuff into actions you need to complete. Actions (events) are to do’s scheduled for some day, so if you have an empty Next Events lists it is time to proceed your inbox.

I like this widget, but iCal DOES launch every time I access Dashboard. I’m most interested in checking on my Google Calendar, which I subscribe to with iCal. Could this be my problem?

    Cheers.

Since the widget uses apple script to interact with iCal it will launch iCal each time you open Dashboard. To prevent this you need not to exit iCal after the first launch (close its window or minimize it but not exit).
Our developers are trying to solve this issue but it is not an easy task to work with iCal without using apple script.

    Hey Alex,

In case you guys aren’t aware, Mac OS X Leopard is providing a Calendar Store framework that will let you read and write iCal data without launching iCal via AppleScript. Moving forward this will be the best (and most supported) way to go. It will require a widget plug-in, but it’s incredibly straightforward.

I’m the Apple Evangelist in charge of iCal and Dashboard among other things so ping me if you’d like to talk it over. I think Calendar Store would fit in well with some of the other products as well and I’d love to see you take advantage of it.

What exactly is shown in the “Next Events” pane? As far as I can see it is today’s actions. Is that correct, is there any way to influence this behaviour? Can I add a next action that will immediately show up in the pane?

Is there anything like a reference manual for this widget?

    TIA

    Chris

  15. AlexTG on March 3, 2007 3:57 pm

    2Chris
Yes, “Next Events” is today’s actions list.
The only way to influence this behavior is to tell us your suggestions, we really appreciate this.

I installed it, and I can see it. When I use the Widget, I can type in an item, but it disappears when I press ENTER or RETURN. It does not show up in the Calendar I selected.

This is the same problem Paul Otterness reported, and you didn’t answer him.

    Why doesn’t it work?

  17. Nick Pappas on March 5, 2007 3:44 am

    OK. It is working.

Will there be Automator support ?

Are you saying using the GTD Widget will add events directly to iCal ?

Will you have documentation for the Apple Script and Objective C so I can add the code to make adding events to iCal seemless ? Will it only be available at WWDC or published ?

  19. AlexTG on April 23, 2007 3:13 pm

    2James
    1. GTD widget adds to-do items directly to iCal, not the events.
    2. I think Automator support is needless for a widget, so we don’t plan to add it.
    3. Please describe what kind of documentation do you need and for what purpose (I mean more detailed description).

trying this in leopard - events are not added they simply dissapear from view when pressing enter.

    Any ideas.

  22. AlexTG on November 8, 2007 2:54 pm

Leopard has made some changes in iCal interaction. May be some time later we will make Leopard compatible version of the widget.

  23. jax on November 17, 2007 12:52 am

I would like a Leopard compatible version as well. There are no longer any ical ToDo widgets compatible with Leopard. :(

  24. Pete on April 9, 2008 5:06 am

I was hoping that this would work with tasks, not events. I use the palm treo to manage my tasks (categories are for contexts) and it get synced to ical (calendars are contexts).
