What is allied health, allied health professionals and allied healthcare services? How do they help a person to be healthy and what is their difference with a general medicine? The allied health practitioners are trained professionals in medicine and healthcare, which use the methods differing from those that are applied in a common medicine and pharmacy, they are not the doctors and nurses, but however they typically work in health care teams helping the main medical specialists in diagnostics and treatment diseases, in patients rehabilitation, recovery, nursing and support, and prevention diseases transmission. Allied professionals in a field of healthcare should usually have special education, be certified specialists and meet national standards of training in a field of medicine and in a chosen highly specialized field that is respective for their professional activities. In general case, their skills must be supported by diplomas and certificates of completion the courses or trainings and receivement the relevant qualifications, professions or degrees.
There are also exceptions when allied health professionals are trained directly by the employer on a work place or in training centers at the large enterprises, and do not require another special trainings or qualifications. The training for some allied profession organized directly at the enterprise allows to prepare the specialists of necessary orientation for a work at this enterprise and in its remote branches in shortest possible terms. As for the professional skills and abilities that allied health professionals should have, in addition to basic knowledge in a field of medicine, also medical terminology and abbreviations, skills in highly specialized field, they should have knowledge and skills in psychology, communication, consultation and ethics, medical law and basics of composition medical documents, as well as the skills in a database management and word processing.
Among allied health practitioners there are the physiotherapists, pharmacists, psychologists, chiropractors, podiatrists, logopedists, optometrists, osteopaths, specialists in prosthetics and orthotics, social workers, occupational therapists, Chinese medicine practitioners, medical radiation practitioners, anesthesiologists, psychotherapists, physiologists, neurophysiologists, laboratory scientists, dental hygienists, medical assistants, nutritionists, lactation consultants, epidemiologists, physiotherapists, and many others. These are the specialists who every day help the patients, along with doctors and nurses, and have a tangible impact on the recovery and further life of patients.
