Chemical at Home

Chemicals play a significant part in our lives and we face them everywhere, including our homes. Moreover, the chemicals are daily used in the home. They include surface cleaners, soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, dishwashing detergent, disinfectants and antiseptics, insect repellents, sprays, bleach, drain cleaners, solvents, paints, acids, fertilizers, and pesticides used in a garden. These include also medicines, cosmetics, perfumes, deodorants, nail polish, hair dyeing, hair styling, flavor enhancers, baking powder, sweeteners, and many other products.

Some chemicals around us are harmful, however, most substances in our environment are harmless. Most of the household chemicals usually used at home aren’t dangerous when used attentively and according to the instruction. At the same time, the safe amount varies for different substances.

Some chemicals need more careful handling, airing the room, and use of additional protectives, for example, gloves, protective glasses, respirators, etc. As a rule, dangerous chemical products are marked by hazard symbols and include warning descriptions of what way a substance is harmful, in which degree, and how to use it safely. Therefore, get to know obligatory the labels on chemical products before using them to avoid harmful impact and protect yourself and your family.

The primary rules of using chemicals tell about the importance of not leaving chemical products unattended, prohibiting storing and using them close to children and animals, avoiding direct contact with skin and mucous membranes, and prescript immediate washing with clear water if direct contact occurs. They also warn about the danger of mixing different household cleaners, especially containing chlorine bleach, because this leads to releasing toxic gases. And obligatory seek medical advice if you or a member of your family got a contact with a toxic chemical.

Sometimes it’s obvious when a chemical is hazardous. For example, if a household cleaner affects a rash when spilled on the skin or cough starts when you breathe irritating fumes. At the same time, some toxic chemicals can cause no immediate or clear symptoms. For example, lead is well known for its poisonous effects. Generally, much lead in your body increases the probability to have health problems.

Limiting the potentially toxic chemicals in your day-to-day life can help you create a safer and healthier home. Learn what is included in the products you purchase and make informed decisions. Store chemicals safely, away from children, and use them carefully. Remember that they may be toxic or flammable, and create a poisonous gas or liquid when mixed.
