Identity Politics
Identity politics is closely connected with the activities of mass social movements. It is a type of political approach realized by different groups forming socio-political unions. They develop political programs based on their specific issues and defend their rights to public recognition and legitimacy. These groups are defined by similar characteristics or identities. Typically, these are gender, race, nationality, religion, ethnicity, ideology, culture, medical conditions, language, profession, political party, education, geographic location, etc.
The second half of the XX century was the period of appearing of large-scale political movements like the wave of feminism, the movement for the civil rights of blacks in the United States, the struggle of American Indians for their rights, etc. These movements were based on the disagreement with injustice towards certain social groups, the struggle for the restoration of justice, and the recognition of these social groups as full-fledged units of society.
The term "identity politics" was introduced by the group of women Combahee River Collective in 1977 and took on widespread usage in the early 1980s. They defended the rights of Black women to be actively involved in politics. This term is related to all political activities connected with injustice in relation to specific discriminated social groups, socially restrained minorities, giving them political freedom, challenging externally imposed limitations.
New social movements and structures representing them are the major subjects of identity politics and defend their identity in the face of society and state. Today, in the context of globalization, identity politics is actively used by representatives of the new generation of social movements promoting alternative lifestyles.
