How to Create an IDEF0 Diagram for an Application Development

IDEF0 methods are intended to model the functions of a process, creating a graphical model that displays: what controls the function, who makes it, what resources are used and how they are connected with other functions. The IDEF0 tool is used to model the decisions, actions, and activities of a software system during the development process. IDEF0 diagram graphically depicts a model of a desired version of the application. ConceptDraw DIAGRAM allows you to create and communicate the IDEF0 diagrams of any complexity.

Software Diagrams

Modern software development begins with designing different software diagrams and also uses a large amount of diagrams in project management and creation graphic documentation. Very popular diagrams that depict a work of applications in various cuts and notations, describe databases and prototype Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs). Software engineering specialists and software designers prefer to use special technical and business graphics tools and applications for easy creation diagrams. One of the most popular is ConceptDraw DIAGRAM diagramming and vector drawing software. ConceptDraw DIAGRAM offers the possibility of drawing with use of wide range of pre-drawn shapes and smart connectors, which allow to focus not on the process of drawing, but on the task's essence. It is a perfect application for design and document development, planning tasks, visualization of data, design the databases, object-oriented design, creation flowcharts of algorithms, modeling business processes, project management, automation of management and development processes, and for many other tasks.

How to Design a Mockup of Apple macOS Sierra GUI

Since that first Macintosh, Apple has always developed and used their own hardware specific operating system. The fundamental style and layout of the Mac OS X user interface have remained largely in place since the earliest versions, but there have been obvious aesthetic enhancements, and elements of icon redesign to match branding across devices. To design an effective user interface, graphic designers will create visual GUI prototypes, that focus on maximizing the user experience. Uses Interface prototyping is much convenient when you can work through a diagram similar to the OS X design. ConceptDraw DIAGRAM allows you to develop Apple OS X User Interface (UI) prototypes using the special templates and vector libraries of the specific user interface elements. ConceptDraw Mac OS X UI solution offers libraries containing the distinct Mac app icons, menu bar graphics, glyph elements and other Mac OS X features — everything necessary to create a high standard, professional UI graphic design.

Use this template to prototype and design the iPhone user interface.
"At WWDC 2007 on June 11, 2007, Apple announced that the iPhone would support third-party web applications using Ajax that share the look and feel of the iPhone interface. On October 17, 2007, Steve Jobs, in an open letter posted to Apple's "Hot News" weblog, announced that a software development kit (SDK) would be made available to third-party developers in February 2008. The iPhone SDK was officially announced and released on March 6, 2008, at the Apple Town Hall facility.
It is a free download, with an Apple registration, that allows developers to develop native applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch, then test them in an "iPhone simulator". However, loading an application onto a real device is only possible after paying an Apple Developer Connection membership fee. Developers are free to set any price for their applications to be distributed through the App Store, of which they will receive a 70% share.
Developers can also opt to release the application for free and will not pay any costs to release or distribute the application beyond the membership fee. The App Store was launched with the release of iOS 2.0, on July 11, 2008. The update was free for iPhone users; owners of older iPod Touches were required to pay US$10 for it.
Once a developer has submitted an application to the App Store, Apple holds firm control over its distribution." [iPhone. Wikipedia]

This circular arrows diagram sample shows the systems development life cycle (SDLC) stages.
"The systems development life cycle (SDLC), also referred to as the application development life-cycle, is a term used in systems engineering, information systems and software engineering to describe a process for planning, creating, testing, and deploying an information system. The systems development life-cycle concept applies to a range of hardware and software configurations, as a system can be composed of hardware only, software only, or a combination of both." "Though service-oriented architecture advocates "everything as a service" (with the acronyms EaaS or XaaS or simply aas), cloud-computing providers offer their "services" according to different models, which happen to form a stack: infrastructure-, platform- and software-as-a-service.
Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
In the most basic cloud-service model ... providers of IaaS offer computers — physical or (more often) virtual machines — and other resources. IaaS refers to online services that abstract the user from the details of infrastructure like physical computing resources, location, data partitioning, scaling, security, backup etc.
Platform as a service (PaaS)
PaaS vendors offer a development environment to application developers. The provider typically develops toolkit and standards for development and channels for distribution and payment. In the PaaS models, cloud providers deliver a computing platform, typically including operating system, programming-language execution environment, database, and web server. Application developers can develop and run their software solutions on a cloud platform without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware and software layers.
Software as a service (SaaS)
In the software as a service (SaaS) model, users gain access to application software and databases. Cloud providers manage the infrastructure and platforms that run the applications. SaaS is sometimes referred to as "on-demand software" and is usually priced on a pay-per-use basis or using a subscription fee.
In the SaaS model, cloud providers install and operate application software in the cloud and cloud users access the software from cloud clients. Cloud users do not manage the cloud infrastructure and platform where the application runs. This eliminates the need to install and run the application on the cloud user's own computers, which simplifies maintenance and support. Cloud applications differ from other applications in their scalability — which can be achieved by cloning tasks onto multiple virtual machines at run-time to meet changing work demand." IDEF0 standard with ConceptDraw DIAGRAM

The activity of any organization is more or less branchy network of processes. The description of these processes is a hard technical task which requires definite methodology and standards. According to the IDEF0 standard any process can be described in the form of a block (Activity Box) which has inputs and outputs. The process consists in transformation of inputs into outputs under the influence of the management and in the presence of necessary resources. Outputs of the given process later on can be either inputs for the next process or resources, or management means.

UI Patterns

The most convenient, useful and right way for software engineers, UI designers, UI developers is to use UI patterns in the process of developing any application for computer devices. The User Interface (UI) patterns are standardized solutions for common design problems.
This office fire escape floor plan example shows layout of firefighting equipment and scheme of evacuation ways.
"Fire protection is the study and practice of mitigating the unwanted effects of potentially destructive fires. It involves the study of the behaviour, compartmentalisation, suppression and investigation of fire and its related emergencies, as well as the research and development, production, testing and application of mitigating systems. In structures, be they land-based, offshore or even ships, the owners and operators are responsible to maintain their facilities in accordance with a design-basis that is rooted in laws, including the local building code and fire code, which are enforced by the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Buildings must be constructed in accordance with the version of the building code that is in effect when an application for a building permit is made. Building inspectors check on compliance of a building under construction with the building code. Once construction is complete, a building must be maintained in accordance with the current fire code, which is enforced by the fire prevention officers of a local fire department. In the event of fire emergencies, Firefighters, fire investigators, and other fire prevention personnel called to mitigate, investigate and learn from the damage of a fire. Lessons learned from fires are applied to the authoring of both building codes and fire codes." [Fire protection. Wikipedia]
The example "Office fire and emergency plan" was created using the ConceptDraw PRO diagramming and vector drawing software extended with the Fire and Emergency Plans solution from the Building Plans area of ConceptDraw Solution Park.

Business Processes

The most worked out and commonly used methodology of business processes description is IDEF methodology. Besides business processes it allows to describe functional blocks, for example production and marketing. ConceptDraw lets creation of business processes description using IDEF0 and IDEF2 methods.
